“The Art Of Not Being Seen” – Sam Ashley

Continuing the awesome UK photographer theme…“The Art Of Not Being Seen” is a new exhibition of Sam Ashley‘s work:

“Sam Ashley has been shooting skateboarding professionally since 1998 and is currently the staff photographer for both Kingpin and Sidewalk Magazine. During the past 12 years of shooting he has traveled extensively throughout the UK and many other parts of the world in his quest to photograph interesting skateboard action.

By drawing on techniques from the often opposing worlds of photojournalism and fine art portraiture, would be action sport shots are turned into images that look as if they could be dramatic stills from art house cinema, which incites an appetite to know and see more. By working in this way he is not only contributing to the documentation of a scene that has had a huge cultural impact over the last four decades, he is also capturing and explaining the fundamental spirit of skateboarding: hope, solitude and freedom.

The exhibition goes beyond the action photographs that the magazines require, giving a behind the scenes look at what goes on before and after the super serious business of skateboarding in front of cameras.

Drinks courtesy of Russian Standard.

Exhibition supported by NikeSB and Carhartt.”

1st April, 7pm till late. Old Shoreditch Station. 1 Kingsland Road, London. E2.
